Construction has started on the XML designed building for the Institute for NightCulture (INC) in Amsterdam. The mission of this cultural institute is to present, produce and document progressive night culture. The new building is nested in a 17th century building block in the heart of the city and consists of a cafe, a small performance space and a large hall with a total capacity of 650 people. INC will function as a cultural incubator at the intersection of contemporary art and nightlife. Although the entire new construction measures 26 meter in section, the new building is carefully woven into the fabric of the city to remain out of sight from outside the block, to comply with the city’s preservation regulations. The interior of the institute will be covered with materials and finishes that allow east adaptation to different programs, functioning as a flexible canvas for a wide variety of activities. A building that will be completed yet will never be finished.
