Paleis Soestdijk

The former Royal Palace Soestdijk is one of the Netherlands’ most significant cultural estates. As design lead for the long-term transformation of the palace and its grounds, XML developed a vision that couples heritage preservation with a new public future. Rather than treating the estate as a static monument, the project approaches it as an evolving civic landscape capable of accommodating contemporary forms of gathering, culture and exchange. The proposal is centered on the sustainable preservation of the historic ensemble. New programs and public activities are carefully integrated to generate the economic and social conditions required for the long-term maintenance of the estate. Architecture operates as a framework that connects restoration, adaptive reuse and landscape development into a single strategy. By positioning the palace as a place for encounter and public engagement, the project redefines the relationship between heritage and contemporary society. The vision transforms a former royal residence into an active cultural destination while safeguarding the spatial and historical qualities that define its identity.
